Week 3: Provo's Most Eligible

I have been so busy these past few weeks that I have barely had time to watch TV. The two shows that I watched this week were the premier of Provo's Most Eligible and the second episode of the Book of Mormon videos. Provo's Most Eligible. What a show. It's so cringy but I love it. This show definitely serves as entertainment. I hosted a watch party with a few of my friends and it was so fun to just get together and talk about all the cringe and who we wanted to date who, etc. My fiance was so sweet. He went out and got us snacks and served us all while we watched. He watched YouTube instead haha.  Something I realized while watching that show is that we love to live vicariously through people on TV. We love to imagine what we would do in their shoes and what we think is the best decision for them as if we actually know. I already feel like I have a parasocial relationship with two of the bachelorettes. I think it's so fascinating that media can impact us in that...

Week 2: If I were a song...

This week in class we talked about "If you were a song - what would you be?" I thought a lot about that. A little too long because I forgot to do this post over the weekend... But anyway, it's not easy to say what song I would be. But eventually, I chose What Ifs by Kane Brown. I am OBSESSED with Kane Brown. Seriously. But I love this song particularly because it talks about "what ifs." I am a HUGE what if person. I am always wondering what if I do this or what if I don't do this what will happen. And it's a problem. But this song talks about the good sides of what-ifs. What if things do work out? What if this is the right road? When I hear that song I think of the good decisions I've made in my life and where they've brought me. I also think about the decisions that weren't the best, but that without them I wouldn't be where I am and who I am today. I do sometimes think of my friend Jake who originally showed this song to me. Thi...

Week 1: Is That How Much Time I REALLY Spend On My Phone?

This week I was really trying to pay attention to how much I was on my phone. And unfortunately, it was a lot. I found myself constantly checking social media or looking at pictures, even if I was doing other things or had just been looking at it. I have time limits set on my phone but I'm always extending them because I need "just a few more minutes." I realized how much time I waste on my phone that could be used doing other, more productive things! So from this, I have decided that this week I will set time limits on my phone and actually stick to them! I will try not to spend more than an hour a day on social media. Which sounds like a lot, but to me it's progress. However, I think it's important to mention that phones can be very useful in capturing and creating lasting memories, like they did for me this weekend when I got engaged!!

About Me

Hi! I'm Sydney Craig and I am a Communications major at BYU with a minor in Family Studies. This semester I am taking the time to look at how media affects me in my daily life. My hobbies include watching Netflix, archery, reading, traveling, playing spikeball with my boyfriend, and road-tripping with friends. I'm excited to see how this semester will help me to not only observe my media intake but also understand the effect it has on my life.
