Week 1: Is That How Much Time I REALLY Spend On My Phone?

This week I was really trying to pay attention to how much I was on my phone. And unfortunately, it was a lot. I found myself constantly checking social media or looking at pictures, even if I was doing other things or had just been looking at it. I have time limits set on my phone but I'm always extending them because I need "just a few more minutes." I realized how much time I waste on my phone that could be used doing other, more productive things! So from this, I have decided that this week I will set time limits on my phone and actually stick to them! I will try not to spend more than an hour a day on social media. Which sounds like a lot, but to me it's progress.

However, I think it's important to mention that phones can be very useful in capturing and creating lasting memories, like they did for me this weekend when I got engaged!!

  1. Congratulations on getting engaged!! That's super exciting! I'm glad someone else is in the same boat as me with extending the time limits on social media. It can be really hard to cut down and to only be on for a small amount of time. Maybe this class will be the push we need to really limit our media use haha ;)

Week 10: BitLife

I have become obsessed with the game BitLife. It's a game where you are assigned a random life and you live it from birth to death. You make choices about school, career, dating, kids, etc. You can even murder people, get in fights, adopt children or pets, and so many other things. When my friend first introduced me to this game I thought it sounded dumb. And then I started playing. And then my fiance started playing. And it's so addicting. You just live out different lives and can make decisions that have virtually "no consequence." I know that many people don't believe in catharsis theory, but I make decisions in this game that I never would in real life. And that's exactly why. It's not real life. I can tell the difference. I make sure to only play when I'm alone or if I'm with my fiance we play together. I don't want it to take away our time together. But honestly, it has been a lot of fun.

Week 2: If I were a song...

This week in class we talked about "If you were a song - what would you be?" I thought a lot about that. A little too long because I forgot to do this post over the weekend... But anyway, it's not easy to say what song I would be. But eventually, I chose What Ifs by Kane Brown. I am OBSESSED with Kane Brown. Seriously. But I love this song particularly because it talks about "what ifs." I am a HUGE what if person. I am always wondering what if I do this or what if I don't do this what will happen. And it's a problem. But this song talks about the good sides of what-ifs. What if things do work out? What if this is the right road? When I hear that song I think of the good decisions I've made in my life and where they've brought me. I also think about the decisions that weren't the best, but that without them I wouldn't be where I am and who I am today. I do sometimes think of my friend Jake who originally showed this song to me. Thi...

Week 7: PG-13 movies

This week we talked about media violence in class. Someone made a comment that got me thinking and bothered me just a little. They talked about how after their family watched a PG-13 movie that they started fighting, almost blaming the movie for the fight. Now the movie may have been a factor but I promise that it didn't start that fight on its own. I think sometimes we jump to conclusions too quickly. That's like saying that anyone who watches PG-13 movies is going to get into fights and the righteous that don't won't, which we know isn't true. We also learned in class that some people are more susceptible to the effects of media than others. I personally watch PG-13 movies. However, I'm still picky about the movies that I watch. I don't just watch anything. I like to look up movie content and see what it's about and how it's been rated and why. Not all PG-13 movies even contain violence. We are told to be thoughtful about the media we con...
