Week 4: General Conference

This weekend was amazing! General Conference is something that I look forward to every six months. This time was no different. I received so much inspiration that I really needed. And sometimes I think I take for granted the fact that General Conference is broadcast live and that's really one of the few ways we can all hear the prophet's voice. Listening to President Nelson speak always gives me chills.

I had a quote that really stuck out to me from this morning. Elder Uchtdorf in his talk said the following: "discipleship is not about doing things perfectly, it is about doing things intentionally." What a profound statement! I think sometimes I worry too much about being a perfect disciple that when I mess up I almost want to just give up rather than keep trying because I won't be doing it "perfectly." But I was reminded this weekend that the Lord cares about our efforts and that we keep trying. He is cheering us on and He will guide us home if we just ask the way.

Week 14: Dear Miley Cyrus

This week we had to write a letter to a prominent person about something we are passionate about. Here is my letter: Dear Miley Cyrus, I want you to know that I understand why you express your opinions so publicly on social media. As a celebrity, you have the power to influence others, for better or for worse. However, I think that before you start proclaiming that “abortion is healthcare” as a blanket statement you should probably take a moment to consider what that statement implies.  To start, I don’t entirely disagree with you. I believe that abortion should be allowed and available in cases of incest, rape, or health risk to the mother or baby. However, this isn’t an excuse to just have an abortion because you “want to” or “you’re not ready” or it was an “accident.” Sex is a big deal. There is a risk of pregnancy every time you have sex. If you are not willing to take that risk or take serious precautions to prevent it then to be honest you shouldn’t be having sex. Y...

Week 7: PG-13 movies

This week we talked about media violence in class. Someone made a comment that got me thinking and bothered me just a little. They talked about how after their family watched a PG-13 movie that they started fighting, almost blaming the movie for the fight. Now the movie may have been a factor but I promise that it didn't start that fight on its own. I think sometimes we jump to conclusions too quickly. That's like saying that anyone who watches PG-13 movies is going to get into fights and the righteous that don't won't, which we know isn't true. We also learned in class that some people are more susceptible to the effects of media than others. I personally watch PG-13 movies. However, I'm still picky about the movies that I watch. I don't just watch anything. I like to look up movie content and see what it's about and how it's been rated and why. Not all PG-13 movies even contain violence. We are told to be thoughtful about the media we con...

Week 2: If I were a song...

This week in class we talked about "If you were a song - what would you be?" I thought a lot about that. A little too long because I forgot to do this post over the weekend... But anyway, it's not easy to say what song I would be. But eventually, I chose What Ifs by Kane Brown. I am OBSESSED with Kane Brown. Seriously. But I love this song particularly because it talks about "what ifs." I am a HUGE what if person. I am always wondering what if I do this or what if I don't do this what will happen. And it's a problem. But this song talks about the good sides of what-ifs. What if things do work out? What if this is the right road? When I hear that song I think of the good decisions I've made in my life and where they've brought me. I also think about the decisions that weren't the best, but that without them I wouldn't be where I am and who I am today. I do sometimes think of my friend Jake who originally showed this song to me. Thi...
