Week 5: Too much screen time

This week was SO busy! I barely had time to catch my breath. My media intake was definitely a lot less than usual, aka no Netflix. However, I spent most of the time on my computer this week. I had a lot of projects and work that took a total of about 20 hours.

I didn't realize how much time is actually spent on the computer that I don't usually count as "media." But I did notice a difference this week because I had more trouble falling asleep. I know that using my computer is necessary and important, for both school and my job, but I want to spend less time on my computer closer to the time I go to bed. It's also so tempting to surf the internet late at night because there's nothing else going on. I think this will help me not only spend less time on it but also get a better night's rest.

  1. I totally know how this is!!! Sometimes it is so nice to take a break but some types of media are so necessary for the time of life we are in. You can do it though!

  2. School was so heavy this week for me too! I feel like I had no time to do anything but homework. I have found that I sleep so much better when I stay off my phone or computer before bed but it is definitely a lot harder when I've been doing homework all day and need to get my mind off of all of it before bed!

Week 14: Dear Miley Cyrus

This week we had to write a letter to a prominent person about something we are passionate about. Here is my letter: Dear Miley Cyrus, I want you to know that I understand why you express your opinions so publicly on social media. As a celebrity, you have the power to influence others, for better or for worse. However, I think that before you start proclaiming that “abortion is healthcare” as a blanket statement you should probably take a moment to consider what that statement implies.  To start, I don’t entirely disagree with you. I believe that abortion should be allowed and available in cases of incest, rape, or health risk to the mother or baby. However, this isn’t an excuse to just have an abortion because you “want to” or “you’re not ready” or it was an “accident.” Sex is a big deal. There is a risk of pregnancy every time you have sex. If you are not willing to take that risk or take serious precautions to prevent it then to be honest you shouldn’t be having sex. Y...

Week 7: PG-13 movies

This week we talked about media violence in class. Someone made a comment that got me thinking and bothered me just a little. They talked about how after their family watched a PG-13 movie that they started fighting, almost blaming the movie for the fight. Now the movie may have been a factor but I promise that it didn't start that fight on its own. I think sometimes we jump to conclusions too quickly. That's like saying that anyone who watches PG-13 movies is going to get into fights and the righteous that don't won't, which we know isn't true. We also learned in class that some people are more susceptible to the effects of media than others. I personally watch PG-13 movies. However, I'm still picky about the movies that I watch. I don't just watch anything. I like to look up movie content and see what it's about and how it's been rated and why. Not all PG-13 movies even contain violence. We are told to be thoughtful about the media we con...

Week 2: If I were a song...

This week in class we talked about "If you were a song - what would you be?" I thought a lot about that. A little too long because I forgot to do this post over the weekend... But anyway, it's not easy to say what song I would be. But eventually, I chose What Ifs by Kane Brown. I am OBSESSED with Kane Brown. Seriously. But I love this song particularly because it talks about "what ifs." I am a HUGE what if person. I am always wondering what if I do this or what if I don't do this what will happen. And it's a problem. But this song talks about the good sides of what-ifs. What if things do work out? What if this is the right road? When I hear that song I think of the good decisions I've made in my life and where they've brought me. I also think about the decisions that weren't the best, but that without them I wouldn't be where I am and who I am today. I do sometimes think of my friend Jake who originally showed this song to me. Thi...
