Week 6: Gilmore Girls

This week I thought a lot about our lecture on gender in the media. One of my favorite actresses of all time is Alexis Bledel. Many people know her as Rory on Gilmore Girls. When thinking about why she is my favorite actress it struck me that she seems real. The character she portrayed was a normal high school and college girl that I could relate to. I never even realized that she was part of the "skinny ideal" because she was always conservatively dressed.

Don't get me wrong, Alexis Bledel is a BEAUTIFUL actress. But they started her out on the show as plain and conservative and as she grew up she obviously started wearing more make-up and fashionable clothes, while still being conservative. I think that the show did a great job of making you more aware of Rory's personality rather than her body, hence why I never even noticed how skinny she was.

But something I did realize is that I have tried to look like her. I've tried the middle bangs, and trust me I didn't rock them like she does. I've tried my hair dark because I have blue eyes, which I actually really loved. She has been an inspiration for me but not in a way that makes me hate myself for the way I look which I think is really cool. Gilmore Girls is one of those shows that I recommend to anyone looking for a good-hearted show with characters they can relate to and a storyline to fall in love with.

Week 10: BitLife

I have become obsessed with the game BitLife. It's a game where you are assigned a random life and you live it from birth to death. You make choices about school, career, dating, kids, etc. You can even murder people, get in fights, adopt children or pets, and so many other things. When my friend first introduced me to this game I thought it sounded dumb. And then I started playing. And then my fiance started playing. And it's so addicting. You just live out different lives and can make decisions that have virtually "no consequence." I know that many people don't believe in catharsis theory, but I make decisions in this game that I never would in real life. And that's exactly why. It's not real life. I can tell the difference. I make sure to only play when I'm alone or if I'm with my fiance we play together. I don't want it to take away our time together. But honestly, it has been a lot of fun.

Week 2: If I were a song...

This week in class we talked about "If you were a song - what would you be?" I thought a lot about that. A little too long because I forgot to do this post over the weekend... But anyway, it's not easy to say what song I would be. But eventually, I chose What Ifs by Kane Brown. I am OBSESSED with Kane Brown. Seriously. But I love this song particularly because it talks about "what ifs." I am a HUGE what if person. I am always wondering what if I do this or what if I don't do this what will happen. And it's a problem. But this song talks about the good sides of what-ifs. What if things do work out? What if this is the right road? When I hear that song I think of the good decisions I've made in my life and where they've brought me. I also think about the decisions that weren't the best, but that without them I wouldn't be where I am and who I am today. I do sometimes think of my friend Jake who originally showed this song to me. Thi...

Week 8: Why do I like being afraid?

This week was Halloween! So naturally, in class, we talked about fear. I started to ask myself, why do I like being afraid? I'm the person who enjoys scary movies and haunted houses and October is one of my favorite months. But then sometimes I'm on edge afterward. But why? We talked about how some people have an openness to fear. I feel like that describes me. I am open to fear but sometimes it causes me to have increased fear. I like to be scared because I like to prove to myself that it's not real and that I can overcome my fear. I'm kind of weird in that way. I have always been afraid of heights so I decided to go skydiving to help me with that. I like facing my fears head-on and trying to conquer them. Maybe it's a good thing? Maybe I'm a weirdo? But either way, it's just who I am.
