Week 10: BitLife

I have become obsessed with the game BitLife. It's a game where you are assigned a random life and you live it from birth to death. You make choices about school, career, dating, kids, etc. You can even murder people, get in fights, adopt children or pets, and so many other things.

When my friend first introduced me to this game I thought it sounded dumb. And then I started playing. And then my fiance started playing. And it's so addicting. You just live out different lives and can make decisions that have virtually "no consequence."

I know that many people don't believe in catharsis theory, but I make decisions in this game that I never would in real life. And that's exactly why. It's not real life. I can tell the difference.

I make sure to only play when I'm alone or if I'm with my fiance we play together. I don't want it to take away our time together. But honestly, it has been a lot of fun.

  1. This is so interesting, I have never heard of this game! Part of me wants to try it but I'm afraid I'm going to get addicted as well!

Week 7: PG-13 movies

This week we talked about media violence in class. Someone made a comment that got me thinking and bothered me just a little. They talked about how after their family watched a PG-13 movie that they started fighting, almost blaming the movie for the fight. Now the movie may have been a factor but I promise that it didn't start that fight on its own. I think sometimes we jump to conclusions too quickly. That's like saying that anyone who watches PG-13 movies is going to get into fights and the righteous that don't won't, which we know isn't true. We also learned in class that some people are more susceptible to the effects of media than others. I personally watch PG-13 movies. However, I'm still picky about the movies that I watch. I don't just watch anything. I like to look up movie content and see what it's about and how it's been rated and why. Not all PG-13 movies even contain violence. We are told to be thoughtful about the media we con...

Week 3: Provo's Most Eligible

I have been so busy these past few weeks that I have barely had time to watch TV. The two shows that I watched this week were the premier of Provo's Most Eligible and the second episode of the Book of Mormon videos. Provo's Most Eligible. What a show. It's so cringy but I love it. This show definitely serves as entertainment. I hosted a watch party with a few of my friends and it was so fun to just get together and talk about all the cringe and who we wanted to date who, etc. My fiance was so sweet. He went out and got us snacks and served us all while we watched. He watched YouTube instead haha.  Something I realized while watching that show is that we love to live vicariously through people on TV. We love to imagine what we would do in their shoes and what we think is the best decision for them as if we actually know. I already feel like I have a parasocial relationship with two of the bachelorettes. I think it's so fascinating that media can impact us in that...

Week 13: Light the World

Last week was Thanksgiving and I totally forgot to post. Anyways, I've had a lot of thoughts running through my mind this week. One of them is Light the World. Light the World has started this month and it has really made me reflect and appreciate those around me. One of the first sharing from this week was to share about someone that is Christlike and I also chose to make a gratitude post about my fiance. He is absolutely amazing and always looking for ways to serve me. I loved the responses I got on my post and also seeing others and the people that they chose to highlight on social media. This reminded me of the GOOD that social media can bring. It can help us show our appreciation for those we love and inspire others to do the same! I remembered to do the challenge because I saw someone else's post. You never know the good influence you can have on someone else :)
