Week 9: Social Media Fast

I am writing this post as I finish my social media fast that I decided to do today with my fiance. We decided to take the day off and just spend time with each other rather than mindlessly scrolling through our phones.

It was awesome! I really feel like we had better conversations and overall just focused on each other more and forgot about our phones all-together.

I highly recommend a 24-hour social media fast for everyone at least once a month. It really helped me put things into perspective and realize how much time I spend mindlessly scrolling.

I am excited and feel like this helped prepare me for the technology fast I want to do this semester!

  1. That's awesome! It's really cool that you were able to feel the benefits of doing a fast like this! I'd love to try that out! I really wish I could do a school fast to focus on my family more. ;) I think that would be really beneficial too!

  2. Good job! I've been meaning to find a time to do that for extra credit, but I keep feeling like it's not a good time. I guess it never is though and that's the point right?

Week 14: Dear Miley Cyrus

This week we had to write a letter to a prominent person about something we are passionate about. Here is my letter: Dear Miley Cyrus, I want you to know that I understand why you express your opinions so publicly on social media. As a celebrity, you have the power to influence others, for better or for worse. However, I think that before you start proclaiming that “abortion is healthcare” as a blanket statement you should probably take a moment to consider what that statement implies.  To start, I don’t entirely disagree with you. I believe that abortion should be allowed and available in cases of incest, rape, or health risk to the mother or baby. However, this isn’t an excuse to just have an abortion because you “want to” or “you’re not ready” or it was an “accident.” Sex is a big deal. There is a risk of pregnancy every time you have sex. If you are not willing to take that risk or take serious precautions to prevent it then to be honest you shouldn’t be having sex. Y...

Week 7: PG-13 movies

This week we talked about media violence in class. Someone made a comment that got me thinking and bothered me just a little. They talked about how after their family watched a PG-13 movie that they started fighting, almost blaming the movie for the fight. Now the movie may have been a factor but I promise that it didn't start that fight on its own. I think sometimes we jump to conclusions too quickly. That's like saying that anyone who watches PG-13 movies is going to get into fights and the righteous that don't won't, which we know isn't true. We also learned in class that some people are more susceptible to the effects of media than others. I personally watch PG-13 movies. However, I'm still picky about the movies that I watch. I don't just watch anything. I like to look up movie content and see what it's about and how it's been rated and why. Not all PG-13 movies even contain violence. We are told to be thoughtful about the media we con...

Week 2: If I were a song...

This week in class we talked about "If you were a song - what would you be?" I thought a lot about that. A little too long because I forgot to do this post over the weekend... But anyway, it's not easy to say what song I would be. But eventually, I chose What Ifs by Kane Brown. I am OBSESSED with Kane Brown. Seriously. But I love this song particularly because it talks about "what ifs." I am a HUGE what if person. I am always wondering what if I do this or what if I don't do this what will happen. And it's a problem. But this song talks about the good sides of what-ifs. What if things do work out? What if this is the right road? When I hear that song I think of the good decisions I've made in my life and where they've brought me. I also think about the decisions that weren't the best, but that without them I wouldn't be where I am and who I am today. I do sometimes think of my friend Jake who originally showed this song to me. Thi...
